The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the most amazing places of the Algarve, not only for its variety of landscapes but also because of its unique location. Elected as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, this is a unique coastal lagoon which is constantly changing due to the continuous movement of winds, currents and tides.
Classified as a Natural Park in 1987, the Ria Formosa encompasses an area of about 18.000 hectares, and is protected from the sea by 5 barrier-islands and 2 peninsulas. Due to these natural features and its geographical location it was included in the list of wetlands of world-wide interest defined by the Ramsar Convention. In this protected area you may witness many different habitas such as barrier-islands, marshes, tidal flats, islets, dunes, saltpans, fresh water lagoons, agricultural areas and woodlands which hold a an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. It's a paradise for birdwatchers.

The area of the central Algarve between Quinta do Lago, Almancil and Vilamoura is often referred to as the Golden Triangle of the Algarve. Anytime. The Algarve is blessed with good weather, with a mild winter and sun almost year-round. In short, weather-wise it is pretty safe most of the year.
For deserted beaches, come outside school holidays. The best months are April, May, June or September, when the sun is hot and visitors few. High summer is in July and August, which can mean loads of fun, nightlife, but also crowded facilities along the coastline. Head inland to find a quiet rural paradise that has changed little over the centuries.
In the winter time, from November to February, although it’s colder at night, there’s often warm sunshine in the middle of the day, so although swimming would only be for the truly hardy it is a wonderful time to have the Algarve to yourself.

The most common method by which travelers get around Algarve is via rental car. Rental cars are generally obtained at the airport upon arrival in the area. Driving regulations in Algarve are standard in terms of international road rules.
Travelers interested in getting around Algarve by other methods do have choices. The bus system in Algarve is not very comprehensive, but serves all major cities on the coastline. EVA Transportes is the main company.
The coastal railway line also links many of the main towns, from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António. There are several trains every day but there are large gaps in the service at weekends. Express trains run to/from the region’s main towns to Lisbon.
